Do what you love

Happy Wednesday!
Today I'm joining Melyssa for the first Creative Collective project!
I'm obsessed with her blog just a bit in case you haven't already realized...

With January almost halfway over and 2014 in full swing, I've really been thinking about the goals I had set for myself earlier this month...news flash: I still don't look like Beyonce, my Betty Crocker skills are not up to par yet, and unless you consider taking a different route to work "traveling to a new place"...I'm really not rocking 2014 right off the bat as much as I wanted to. As it turns out, resolutions are easier said than done. Worry not, because though I'm not off to the best start, I have been feeling incredibly happy all month long! The happiest I have been in a long time actually. This project came at just the right time, and I am so excited to be joining in on such a fun community based activity!

When I read what the first prompt for The Creative Collective project was, I was ecstatic!

Think of a word that you want to focus on in 2014

A million and one words immediately came to mind! After much thought, I came up with this...

Alright, it's not a word exactly, but it's something that I am holding near and dear to me all year long! Before I was diagnosed with my tumor, I was kind of a weird girl. I'm still kind of weird but let's pretend I'm not for now. I was OBSESSED with getting straight A's. I was taking a ridiculous amount of classes, ignoring my friendships to focus on school work, depriving myself of sleep, dropping my favorite hobbies like running and playing the viola, you get the point. I was just so fixated on being this perfect student so I could have a fabulous future.

And then guess what?
God placed a little something inside of me that took all of that away from me in the blink of an eye.
Guess what else?
It was the best thing He could have done for me!

Now I'm not saying being sick is the best thing. It's actually the worst thing. Ever. I've gone through a serious, serious phase of denial, anger, and sadness. It got to the point once where I was so upset that I broke a window in my room a'la Lindsay Lohan. Not my proudest moment.

To be honest with you, I still have my days where I'm frustrated beyond belief. For the most part though, I feel so content that I have learned what is important to me. Being a straight A student isn't something I loved. Turning in all my assignments and getting perfect scores didn't make my life feel complete. Getting into my "dream school" didn't make me a better person.

You know what I do love?
BLOGGING!
Baking
Reading
Making memories with friends
Laughing
Singing Taylor Swift songs VERY loudly in the car
Running barefoot through the grass with the kids I work with
Showing kindness towards strangers
Taking pictures
Fresh air
Walks with Andy & Duke
Chats with my mom & dad over coffee
Watching my brother play the drums
Tickling my nieces and nephews

I've loved learning new things and exploring new passions just because. It's truly been such a life changing thing to just do things for the sake of doing them! I'll try my best not to sound so morbid, but what if I had died right away? I would have missed out on so many wonderful things because there was a textbook blocking my way. School is still an important part of my life, but it's not the only part of my life. I'm determined to love and appreciate everything I do, and do and appreciate everything I love this year.

What word are YOU focusing on in 2014?

  2. News flash: You've got all year for your resolutions, not just January! Heehee, so don't feel bad about not accomplishing Beyonce status in only 16 days. It took her longer than that too! :)
Your list of things you love could basically be my list of things I love - can we be best friends already?!
And your craft is so cute - that frame is so great! It makes your words look so classy. And I know we've already discussed our love for that champagne candle, but I want to again, because how great is it?!
Okay, fangirling over for now, promise!
